Earthquake shakes Bosnia and Montenegro
A magnitude 5.4 earthquake has shaken the border region between Bosnia and Montenegro. The epicenter of the quake, which occurred early on Thursday morning, was around 30 kilometers from the Montenegrin town of Niksic and around 25 kilometers from the Bosnian town of Bileca.
No information about possible damage or casualties was initially available. According to the US earthquake observatory USGS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.6 kilometers and was felt in Bosnia's capital Sarajevo, among other places.
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake in the region in April 2022 left one person dead and several injured.
High seismic activity
The Balkan region has a high level of seismic activity. At the end of December 2020, a magnitude 6.4 quake in Croatia killed seven people and destroyed hundreds of buildings.
In March 2020, the Croatian capital Zagreb was shaken by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake, which caused extensive damage. In November 2019, more than 50 people died in a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Albania.
