Atletico Madrid against Inter Milan from 9pm LIVE
Atletico Madrid completed the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday. The Spaniards progressed after a 2:1 win after extra time against Inter Milan (without the injured Austrian star Marko Arnautovic) with a 3:2 penalty shoot-out win. Dortmund, Paris, Bayern, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Barcelona are also in the last eight.
Last year's finalists and superior Serie A leaders, who were without injured first-leg goalscorer Marko Arnautovic, made their first appearance in their opponents' penalty area in the 13th minute: Denzel Dumfries tested Jan Oblak twice, but Atletico's keeper made a skillful save (13').
Inter score, Atletico equalize
However, the Slovenian was beaten 20 minutes later. After an impressive attack across several positions, Nicolo Barella crossed the ball into the middle for Federico Dimarco to finish. The Spaniards' reply was not long in coming. Inter got the ball out of the danger zone, Benjamin Pavard made a mistake when trying to clear the ball and unintentionally served the ball to his French national team colleague Antoine Griezmann, who was successful with a direct shot (35').
Griezmann also provided the first highlight after the break, his shot tamed by Sommer (53). At the other end of the pitch, Inter missed the opportunity to take an early lead through Marcus Thuram (76') and Barella (81'). This was to take its revenge in the 87th minute - "joker" Memphis Depay, who had hit the aluminum shortly before, beat Sommer with a sharp low shot into the far corner (88').
Stars miss penalty
Rodrigo Riquelme missed a spot-kick for Atletico in the 93rd minute, meaning the game went into extra time, where Atletico had the best opportunity. However, Sommer remained the winner against Depay (96'). As a result, neither team took the very last risk. In the penalty shoot-out, Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen failed to beat Oblak and Saul Niguez failed to beat Sommer respectively, before world champion Lautaro Martinez slammed his penalty well over the crossbar to seal Inters' exit.
