35 people have been injured in a fire in a large residential building in the Upper Palatinate (Germany). Among them were two seriously injured and children, said a spokesman for the Upper Palatinate police. The cause of the fire was initially unclear.

Special forces from the criminal investigation department were initially unable to enter the building in Nittenau (Bavaria) on Thursday evening. "As things stand, the fire broke out in the basement, in a storage room where paper or waste paper was stored," said the police spokesman. The smoke had therefore developed strongly.

The fire department arrived with 150 helpers and numerous rescue workers were also on site. The emergency services were able to extinguish the fire quickly and rescue seven people with the help of turntable ladders and scaling ladders.

House uninhabitable for the time being
35 people were injured by the smoke, two of them seriously. Seven of them were taken to hospital, one person by rescue helicopter. The fire broke out at around 5 p.m. on Thursday evening. The street in which the house is located was temporarily closed.

A total of around 60 residents are registered in the house, which consists of two halves. They were initially housed and cared for in a neighboring sports hall. "The house is likely to be uninhabitable for the time being," said the spokesperson.
