"God asked..."
Madonna reveals the first word after her coma
A shock moment for Madonna fans: the Queen of Pop was forced to postpone part of her world tour when she was suddenly admitted to hospital in June last year. The 65-year-old has now spoken about her "near-death experience" and also revealed her first words after waking up from her coma.
Pop star Madonna is currently back on stage after a serious illness. She told her fans about the dramatic days in the middle of last year. "It was a strange thing to no longer feel like I was in control," said the singer during her performance in California, according to Variety.
Due to a serious bacterial infection, the pop icon had to spend several days in intensive care in June and her world tour, which was originally scheduled to begin in mid-July, had to be postponed.
"No, no, no"
The 65-year-old described the emergency situation as "pretty scary" and revealed the first word she said after waking from her coma. "I got a surprise in the summer," Madonna continued to tell her fans, according to Variety.
"It's called a near-death experience. Yeah, and I'm not kidding. It was pretty scary. Of course, I didn't know about it for four days because I was in an induced coma. But when I woke up, the first word I said was: 'No'. At least that's what my assistant told me."
She was "pretty sure" that "God was asking me: 'Do you want to come to us? Do you want to come to me? Do you want to go this way?' And I said: 'No. No. No!'" Madonna also recalled her difficult road to recovery, saying it was "so hard" to walk from her house to the garden to sit in the sun.
Madonna thanks her doctor and her children
Opening the first of five performances at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, Madonna said the illness had been a "surprise" and thanked a "very special man" in the audience, her doctor David Agus.
"When I was sick this summer and literally couldn't get from my bed to the bathroom, I called him every other day and asked him why I had no energy, when my energy would come back, when I would feel myself again, when I could go on tour again."
He continued: "He always said: 'Get out in the sun, you need vitamin D and your kidneys will keep working'." The Queen of Pop also praised her six children for lovingly supporting her during her illness.
