Phil Foden and Erling Haaland were the match-winners in Manchester City's 3:1 victory over United in the city derby on Sunday. Nevertheless, the two stars left very different impressions of the match.

While City coach Pep Guardiola praised Foden as "currently the best player in the Premier League", Haaland caused astonishment with an uncharacteristic miss. The Norwegian put his shot from a good two meters over the empty goal.

"That was probably the worst miss I've ever seen at this level," marveled former world-class attacker Gary Linker on the social media platform X about the ex-Salzburg player's action at the end of the first half. "I have no explanation for it," added former United captain Roy Keane.

Foden turned the game around in the second half with two goals after Marcus Rashford had given United an early lead. "He was always a talented player, but now he is more mature and understands the game better, especially in defense," Guardiola praised the 23-year-old Englishman. "He loves soccer, he lives for soccer. He's a joy and his work ethic is incredible," said the Spaniard. Foden has been playing for City since he was eight years old. Guardiola once helped him make his first-team debut as a 17-year-old.

Showdown against Liverpool coming up
Haaland scored his 18th goal of the season shortly before the end to give City a deserved 3-1 win. He also received praise from his coach. "The great players I've met-and I've been lucky enough to coach some of them-have this ability to forget in an instant," explained Guardiola. "And if he misses five more chances, he can think about it for ten seconds. Then he has to put it out and move on." The second-placed "Citizens" will also be hoping for the same skills in the key game at league leaders Liverpool next Sunday (4.45pm).

Manchester United have been baking much smaller buns for years, as was also made clear on Sunday. "Red Devils" coach Erik ten Hag, however, did not want to make out any difference in class. "Absolutely not. We have a lot of injury problems and yet we still had a chance," said the Dutchman. "If we have everyone on board, we can be really competitive. You have to remember that City are the best team in the world at the moment." United are currently 18 points behind their city rivals and are sixth in the league.
