A sigh of relief in the Vatican: Pope Francis has been discharged from the Gemelli Clinic in Rome "fully fit for duty" following examinations and is once again holding audiences as planned.

The 87-year-old Francis had to undergo several examinations on Wednesday, including a computer tomography scan. Immediately after the general audience in the Vatican Audience Hall on Wednesday morning, he was taken in his white Fiat 500 to the ecclesiastical clinic on the Tiber Island in Rome. Shortly afterwards, he left the hospital again by car.

He had recently been suffering from a "mild flu". Several private audiences were canceled as a result. However, Francis held the midday prayer on Sunday.

On Wednesday, he held another private audience and received Armenian Catholic bishops in the Vatican. However, the prepared text was read out by a member of his staff - as well as at the subsequent general audience.

Knee and respiratory problems
Francis was last briefly hospitalized for an examination in November. At the time, he had partial pneumonia, which was treated with antibiotics. Since then, he has repeatedly suffered from respiratory problems. He also usually moves around in a wheelchair due to knee problems.
