Italy also accommodates angry farmers

After the German and French governments, the Italian government is now also making concessions to the protesting farmers. On Wednesday, Rome signaled tax relief for farmers.

Parliamentary Minister Luca Ciriani held out the prospect of partially abolishing the recently abolished income tax exemption. A tax exemption for agricultural entrepreneurs is being examined, said Ciriani in parliament.

Italian farmers are an important pillar of support for the right-wing government of Giorgia Meloni. Coldiretti, the most important agricultural lobby group, maintains close contacts with the government.

Farmers in several European countries have protested with demonstrations against low producer prices, rising costs, cheap imports and climate protection requirements imposed by the European Union. In Germany, the federal government promised farmers concessions. The French government acted similarly. The protests then died down in both countries.
