Blocked for parliament
Ex-minister filed work files as “private”
The fledgling committees of inquiry have already uncovered their first bizarre case. Files on the health insurance reform were archived in the state archives by former Health Minister Beate Hartinger-Klein of the FPÖ as required by law, but are blocked for all institutions - from parliament to the Court of Audit to the ministry.
The reason for this is that they were filed under the seal "private". There is currently no way to circumvent this, as Andreas Hanger, ÖVP parliamentary group leader in the U-committees, told the "Krone" newspaper.
Almost all parties are now in favor of a reform of the archive law. One possibility would be for Hartinger-Klein to withdraw the seal. The former head of the State Archives, Wolfgang Maderthaner, had unsuccessfully appealed to the government to take the abolition of official secrecy as an opportunity to revise the Federal Archives Act.
