Gender reassignment: Argentina wants a ban

After the USA, the Argentinian government now also wants to ban sex changes for minors. A corresponding law from 2012 is to be amended, said a government spokesperson. This concerns hormone treatments and body reassignment surgery for people under the age of 18.

Such treatments would pose a "serious risk" to the physical and mental health of minors, government spokesman Manuel Adomi said on Wednesday (local time). Countries that have already restricted gender reassignment for minors include Finland, Sweden, the UK and the USA.

In future, prisoners will also be prohibited from requesting a transfer "due to a sex change". A prisoner incarcerated in a men's prison would then "no longer be able to ask to be transferred to a women's section simply because they perceive themselves as such", said Adorni.

Previously, legal guardians had to give their consent
Under the current law, minors can undergo gender reassignment treatment if their legal guardians or a judicial authority give their consent. The Argentinian government's decision came a week after US President Donald Trump issued a decree restricting gender reassignment treatments for minors under the age of 19.

President Javier Milei is considered an admirer of Trump, most recently raging against the so-called woke ideology at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
