Pam Bondi becomes Trump’s new Attorney General

The US Senate has confirmed Pam Bondi, the former Attorney General of Florida, as the new Attorney General. All 53 Republican senators and Democrat John Fetterman voted in favor of the 59-year-old. In her new position, she will take over one of the most important ministries in US President Donald Trump's administration.

The Republican had initially earmarked the controversial former congressman Matt Gaetz for the post. However, he withdrew his candidacy after allegations emerged that he had had sex with a minor and used drugs. After Gaetz' withdrawal, Trump backed Bondi, citing her 20 years of experience as a prosecutor.

Close confidante
Bondi is considered a loyal confidante of the Republican, supported him in the first impeachment proceedings back in 2019 and is likely to consistently pursue the line he has set out in the Department of Justice.

Trump is currently taking steps to bind the Department of Justice more closely to his political goals, alongside other authorities. 

Fear of reprisals
In this context, several FBI agents sued the Department of Justice shortly before Bondi's confirmation. The agents, who were involved in the investigation into the storming of the US Capitol on 6 January 2021, among other things, are facing reprisals. The FBI is subordinate to the Department of Justice.
