Speeder ran over small beaver in road tunnel

There is outrage about a speeding driver who ran over a stray rodent in the Wachau region - even though other drivers on the opposite carriageway were already trying to "scare away" the frightened animal. 

A beaver had come from the nearby Danube floodplains into the road tunnel near Dürnstein in the Wachau. There, the frightened animal wandered around, desperately looking for a way out. Somewhere in the middle of the concrete tube, where it is most hopeless for a helpless four-legged friend, it met its fate far from its habitat.

According to eyewitnesses, a speeding driver coming from Weissenkirchen at 11 p.m. crashed into the tube at far too high a speed. This was despite the fact that other drivers had already stopped in the opposite lane and were using their hazard warning lights to "scare" the frightened rodent to safety.

The rescue operation was a gruesome failure. The unscrupulous car driver ran over the four-legged friend and didn't even stop.

"I heard a loud pumping noise and the little one was gone. The beaver was still bleeding and writhing on the asphalt. Its death throes lasted at least 10 minutes", describes a shocked eyewitness to the incident.
