Over 34 degrees: hottest day of the year so far

The heatwave has long since arrived in Austria with temperatures of over 34 degrees. Weather experts are even talking about the hottest day of the year so far. But it's going to get even hotter, as the 35 degree mark could be broken in Vienna on Saturday afternoon. The rest of the country will also enjoy plenty of sunshine and midsummer temperatures.

The weekend offers perfect bathing weather for young and old. Even in the mountains, we can expect midsummer temperatures. Up to 26 degrees on the Feuerkogel at an altitude of just under 1600 meters. There will be no brief cooling off in the night before Sunday, as it will remain mostly hot and sunny throughout Austria on Sunday. Up to 34 degrees are expected at Lake Niedersiedl, for example.

No new Austrian record
However, the temperatures are still a long way off the previous Austrian record. The hottest maximum temperatures ever measured in Austria were recorded on August 8, 2013 in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg at 40.5 degrees.

Cooling is coming
However, the extreme heatwave will be followed by a cold front from the west just in time for the turn of the month, which will bring plenty of showers and thunderstorms. The wind will be weak to moderate from west to north. Temperatures will also be between 18 and 25 degrees at most. It will cool down the most in the south of the country.
