A Mother’s Day like back then: from verses to flowers

In Lower Austria, Mother's Day traditions are still upheld - unlike in the federal capital: For days, local kindergartens have been preparing everything for the day of honor on Sunday.

Traditions are passed down through the generations. This includes beloved Mother's Day customs. A poem read aloud or a gift made by the children themselves have made mothers' eyes light up for 100 years. In contrast to Vienna, where Mother's Day celebrations have been banned in many kindergartens as outdated, the day of honor is celebrated extensively in the wide country.

Whether at the traditional Mother's Day breakfast in the kindergarten with special mother-child play stations or at a picnic in the garden with cake and music. On Sunday, the children then sing songs such as "I want to be a little sunshine" or "Put your hand in my hand" to their mothers in many places.

"In our local kindergartens we do handicrafts, and we also work on songs and poems," says Provincial Councillor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister. They have been working hard on the gifts for days - from herbal salt or dandelion honey to printed shopping bags and home-made pottery figurines - the main thing is that they are made with lots of love.

Competition runs from May 12 to 26
At the Landhauskindergarten in St. Pölten, homemade soaps were made for the moms as well as bracelets made from glass beads. And Familienland(familienpass.at) is giving away 100 tickets for the family festival at Schallaburg Castle on June 2 to mark its 100th anniversary.
