No EIA obligation for Kahlenberg cable car project

The Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology has applied for a procedure to determine the environmental impact of the planned "Kahlenberg cable car". The investigation procedure carried out has now revealed that no environmental impact assessment needs to be carried out.

After a thorough examination by the authority, it has now been determined that, on the one hand, no environmental impact assessment is required for the possible cable car up the Kahlenberg, including for the planned Park & Ride facility. This is because certain criteria of the EIA Act were not met or did not apply.

No final approval
However, this decision does not mean final approval for the project. It is merely a determination of the authority's responsibility in accordance with the current legal framework. The final decision on the realization of the cable car depends on further approval procedures, such as those relating to forestry law, railroad law, water law and nature conservation law.
