No tsunami warning
Taiwan shaken again by a series of earthquakes
Taiwan was once again shaken by a series of earthquakes on Saturday night. The strongest quake had a magnitude of 6.1. According to eyewitnesses, the tremors triggered a cell phone alarm in the capital Taipei.
There was no tsunami warning, according to the Taiwanese Meteorological Agency. According to the fire department, there was initially no information about damage.
Several aftershocks
The strongest quake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred at 2.21 a.m. (local time, 8.21 p.m. CEST). This was followed by several smaller aftershocks before there was another stronger earthquake at 2.49 am. A total of ten quakes of varying magnitude were counted after midnight.
Buildings in Taiwan had swayed during a series of earthquakes at the beginning of the week, one of which reached a magnitude of 6.3 in Hualien in the east of the island.
Last earthquake in early April
At least 17 people were killed in an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 on April 3. It was the most severe quake in Taiwan for a quarter of a century. Numerous buildings in the city of Hualien were damaged and the quake triggered landslides in the surrounding mountains, blocking a number of roads.

Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan because two tectonic plates collide near the island. Strict building regulations therefore apply. In 1999, around 2,400 people lost their lives in the most devastating earthquake in Taiwan's history.
