NFL Draft 2024:
Record! 6 quarterbacks among the first 12 picks
As expected, the spotlight belonged to the young quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft. There were six playmakers among the first twelve picks - never before in history have there been so many. Caleb Williams was the first name and also the first quarterback to be called on Thursday in Detroit. The Chicago Bears opted for the winner of the Heisman Trophy (award for the best college player) for the 2022 season.
Jayden Daniels (2nd pick/Washington Commanders), Drake Maye (3rd/New England Patriots), Michael Penix Jr. (8th/Atlanta Falcons), J.J. McCarthy (10th/Minnesota Vikings) and Bo Nix (12th/Denver Broncos) were other quarterbacks selected in the first round. Only once before in NFL history had six quarterbacks been drafted in the first round of the talent draft: in 1983, playmaking legends John Elway and Dan Marino as well as Jim Kelly were among those selected.
UCLA graduate Laiatu Latu was the first defensive player to join the Indianapolis Colts, the team of Austrian Bernhard Raimann, at number 15. This set another record, as never before in the Super Bowl era since the 1960s had the first defensive player been selected so late.
No red-white-red participation
The NFL draft will continue over the next two days with rounds two to seven. There are no Austrian players available for selection this time.
