Lower Austria: Remains of 7500-year-old buildings uncovered

At the construction site for a new wind farm in Paasdorf in Lower Austria, archaeologists have discovered the foundations of buildings dating back around 7500 years. Ceramic vessels, stone tools and a special burial were also unearthed, EVN and ImWind announced on Sunday.

The finds near Mistelbach were discovered during preparatory work for the construction of the foundation. The ground plans of a total of nine buildings were almost completely documented, said Kurt Fiebig, head of the archaeological site supervision.

Finds partly completely preserved
"These building finds date back to the early Neolithic period." According to the archaeologist, some of the ceramic vessels and stone tools are also completely preserved and intact. Once the work is complete, the finds will be handed over to the city museum archive.

Excavations were carried out in four places on the site where seven wind turbines from EVN and ImWind with a total output of 40.2 megawatts are to be built. "If it weren't for construction work like this for the erection of ultra-modern wind turbines, such ancient treasures as 7500-year-old vessels wouldn't even come to light," said Mistelbach Mayor Erich Stubenvoll.
