Bayer Leverkusen have remained unbeaten in their first league game after clinching the German Bundesliga title. Thanks to a late equalizer, the Werkself fought their way to a 1:1 draw at Borussia Dortmund on Sunday. 

Leverkusen thus survived their 45th competitive match this season without defeat. Dortmund's opening goal from Niclas Füllkrug was set up by Marcel Sabitzer and was his ninth competitive assist of 2023/24.

Sabitzer was played in by Julian Brandt with his heel and the DFB team striker Füllkrug converted his cross directly in the 81st minute in front of 81,365 spectators at the sold-out Signal Iduna Park. In stoppage time, Josip Stanisic broke free from Sabitzer at a corner and headed home in the seventh minute of stoppage time to the delight of the visiting fans. Once again, Leverkusen, who advanced to the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday, showed their goalscoring qualities late on this season.

As a result, fifth-placed Dortmund suffered a setback in the battle for Champions League qualification after advancing to the Champions League semi-finals during the week. With four rounds to go, they are two points off fourth-placed Leipzig, who they face next week.
