Fake bank employee swindles 20,000 euros

A 69-year-old woman from Salzburg fell victim to internet fraudsters posing as bank employees. The woman gave a supposed security expert access to her computer and gave him codes for bank transfers.

The woman was contacted by telephone by an unknown person. He pretended to be an employee of her bank's cyber department. The man made her believe that her online banking access was infected with malware that he could remove.

Using remote maintenance software, he gained access to the woman's laptop. The woman from Salzburg then used a code to authorize two transfers with a total value of almost 20,000 euros.

The investigation is ongoing.
