Chaos at the soccer hit:
Club remained silent during homophobic fan derailments
Not again! Rapid have not yet served all the suspensions imposed for the incidents following the 3:0 win over Austria, but memories of the scandalous derby in Vienna have been brought back. Namely before the second league match between Ried and GAK. Before there was also rioting with the police after the 1-0 win for Graz . . .
The Innviertel-Arena was pretty full with 6,200 spectators, the performance was pretty good, but the final result, as in last year's relegation season, was too often pretty bad.
Football-Ried's second division 0:1 against GAK was reminiscent of faded old times. Which was actually partly brilliant. But it wasn't just what happened outside the stadium after the final whistle that was fatal:
Bottles, stones, firecrackers!
Bottles, stones and firecrackers also flew at police officers - resulting in two injured officers. In addition, a GAK supporter fell over a high fence into the stadium and was also injured. Long before kick-off, memories of the last scandalous Vienna derby had already been awakened: By the fan groups of both clubs hurling homophobic abuse at each other before and during the teams' warm-up.
Why didn't Ried's club gangs react?
Why didn't Ried's club gangs at least try to intervene in the form of announcements? "You could hear the same thing as back then in Vienna," noted ORF reporter Dennis Bankowski away from the microphone about the fans' verbal outbursts. And in front of the microphone, ORF pundit Roman Mählich was rather critical despite the Innviertel side's strong performance: "Ried play, run, sprint, but nothing comes out!"
