Trabzonspor fans attack opposing players
Trabzonspor fans have caused another scandal in the Turkish soccer league. Dozens of supporters stormed the pitch after the 2:3 against Fenerbahce on Sunday evening
The crowd attacked the cheering players and the opposing team's coaching staff, as Fenerbahce announced after the match. There were also scuffles, as Turkish media unanimously reported. Photos and videos after the final whistle were also shared on social media.
The Fenerbahce professionals and the referees had to be protected by security personnel and fled into the dressing rooms to escape the onrushing fans, as the media also reported. The match had to be interrupted several times beforehand because fans were throwing objects onto the pitch.
Not the first incident
Turkish soccer had already made negative headlines recently with incidents of violence. Last year, referee Halil Umut Meler was attacked after a match.
Meler now also refereed the match in Trabzon. Fenerbahce are in second place in the Süper Lig after 30 match days with 79 points and still have a chance of winning the championship, two points behind leaders Galatasaray. Trabzonspor are already 30 points behind Fenerbahce in third place.
