Alcaraz “nervous” – but relaxed in the quarter-finals
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are through to the quarter-finals of the ATP 1000 tennis tournament in Indian Wells and are the favorites after the withdrawal of world number one Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz had little trouble against the Hungarian Fabian Marozsan on Tuesday, winning 6:3, 6:3; the Spaniard will now face the German Alexander Zverev. Sinner defeated Ben Shelton from the USA 7:6(4),6:1 and will now play Jiri Lehecka from the Czech Republic.
"I was nervous before the match," admitted Alcaraz, who had lost to Marozsan in Rome last year. But this time the world number two gave the Magyar, who had eliminated Yuri Rodionov in round one, no chance. "I'm very happy with the way I played," said the Spaniard, delighted with his 50th victory at an ATP 1000 tournament. Olympic champion Zverev, who defeated Australian Alex de Minaur 5:7, 6:2, 6:3, now awaits.
18th win in a row
Meanwhile, Australian Open champion Sinner celebrated his 18th win in a row. "There were some difficult moments, especially in the first set. I'm glad I won it," said the Italian after his success against the 16th-ranked Shelton. The next hurdle is Lehecka, who after Russia's Andrei Rublev also knocked Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas out of the competition in Indian Wells.
In the women's singles, top seed Iga Swiatek reached the last eight with a clear two-set victory over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva and will face Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, who defeated Germany's Angelique Kerber 6:4, 6:2 in a duel between two mothers. Ukraine's Marta Kostjuk and Russia's Anastasia Potapova have also reached the quarter-finals.
