Woman attacked by bear: “Thought that was it!”

A 55-year-old woman from Butler in the US state of Pennsylvania was attacked by a bear while out walking her dog. Lee Ann Galante thought her last hour had come, but thanks to her dog she is still alive.

At her bedside, the woman recounted the traumatic experience: she was suddenly pushed to the ground, bitten and scratched by a black bear. "I really thought that was it," said the still shocked woman. She screamed at the top of her lungs and hoped that help would come, the 55-year-old continued.

Dog as lifesaver?
In the end, it was probably her dog that briefly distracted the mother bear and gave Galante the opportunity to escape into the house.

Mother bear euthanized
Miraculously, the woman escaped without any life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the mother bear was euthanized by gamekeepers and her three cubs will have to fend for themselves from now on.
