Increase in overnight stays
Winter season: Asians drive our tourism
The winter season has gone well for domestic tourism businesses so far. Between November and January, overnight stays across Austria rose by 4.4 percent to 32.05 million, according to preliminary results from Statistics Austria. "The growth is mainly due to guests from abroad, who account for three quarters of overnight stays," said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas on Tuesday.
At the halfway point of the winter season, overnight stays by guests from abroad increased by 4.5 percent to 24.60 million, and by guests from Austria by 4 percent to 7.45 million.
Significant increase in Asian guests
There was strong growth in overnight stays by Asian guests between November and January. Overnight stays by Chinese tourists more than doubled compared to the same period last year. Overnight stays by guests from Japan (+62 percent), South Korea (+69 percent) and Taiwan (+108 percent) also increased significantly.
The significant increase in Asian guests proves that this important market of origin is also continuing to stabilize.
