The Israeli army has reported that it has rescued two Hamas hostages from the Gaza Strip. Both were said to be in good health and had been taken to Sheba Hospital in central Israel for medical examination. The rescue operation was accompanied by heavy air strikes.

The two hostages, aged 60 and 70, were freed during a joint operation by the military, the security service and the Israeli police during the night in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip. Israel's military had previously announced a series of attacks in the area. As the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported, citing medical personnel in the city, dozens of people were killed in the heavy Israeli air strikes and several more were injured.

According to army spokesman Richard Hecht, the two men were freed from the second floor of a building, during which there was a fierce exchange of fire. The Israeli domestic intelligence service Shin Bet and the special police unit were among those involved in the rescue operation. Both men had been abducted from the kibbutz Nir Yitzhak on October 7.

Air strikes in support of the special forces
The airstrikes were carried out to enable the withdrawal of the special forces, explained Hecht. According to eyewitnesses, aircraft, tanks and ships were involved in the attacks.

Netanyahu: "Safe corridor" for civilians
Meanwhile, preparations for the Israeli ground offensive in Rafah continued. These will "probably take some time" and have not yet been presented to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a report in the "New York Times". Netanyahu's plan has met with international criticism, including from Austria and the UN. US President Joe Biden called for a convincing concept for the protection of the civilian population there. Netanyahu promised that there would be a "safe corridor" for civilians.
