Wrong-way driver turned around in the middle of the highway tunnel

On Monday night, a wrong-way driver caused a huge commotion on the Rhine Valley highway. The 31-year-old reversed his car in the middle of the Amberg tunnel - only with a lot of luck was it possible to avoid a major disaster.

At around 11:30 p.m., the 31-year-old drove his car into the highway tunnel in the direction of Tyrol. He brought his vehicle to a brief standstill in the second breakdown bay before turning around and continuing in the overtaking lane in the direction of Germany. In the seconds that followed, three vehicles came towards him, and in two cases a head-on crash was narrowly avoided.

After 80 meters, the wrong-way driver became aware of his fatal mistake and turned his car around again. The 31-year-old was finally stopped by the police near Nüziders and subjected to a check. As it turned out, the man was not impaired by alcohol or drugs.

The Bludenz highway police (0 59 133 8101) are now asking the three drivers who were specifically endangered by the wrong-way driver to come forward.
