Car catches fire on the Inntal highway

Shock for a car driver on Friday morning on the A12 Inntalautobahn in the Tyrolean district of Schwaz: his car suddenly burst into flames while he was driving and was fully engulfed in flames a short time later. It took the fire department to get the flames under control. 

At around 10 a.m., the driver, a man from the Tyrolean Oberland, was heading east in his Mercedes when he suddenly heard strange noises coming from the engine compartment of his car near Stans, according to information from "Krone". Shortly afterwards, flames were blazing from the engine compartment and the area of the right front tire. 

The driver steered his vehicle onto the emergency lane and got out of the car; other drivers made an emergency call. The driver tried to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher, but had no chance. Only the Schwaz municipal fire department was able to extinguish the vehicle, which was now fully engulfed in flames. 

No injuries, long traffic jam
Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, but the car was totaled. During the firefighting operation and the subsequent clearing and cleaning work by Asfinag, the A12 in the eastbound direction had to be closed to all traffic for short periods of time. This resulted in a considerable tailback.
