20-year-old drove onto level crossing despite red light

A female driver (20) drove into a level crossing in Seekirchen (Salzburg) on Friday evening despite the traffic light flashing red. The barriers closed shortly afterwards. The woman was able to get to safety on foot. 

A 20-year-old woman made a fatal decision at the level crossing on Anton-Windhager-Straße in Seekirchen: she wanted to cross the railway line even though the red light was already warning of an approaching train. When the barriers closed shortly afterwards, the woman got out to get to safety.

Despite emergency braking
Despite emergency braking, the driver of a Railjet train coming from Vienna was unable to prevent a collision with the car. The car was seriously damaged and the locomotive was slightly damaged.

Train service interrupted
Train services were interrupted for almost an hour after the incident. ÖBB appeals to all road users to be particularly attentive at railroad crossings: "Never drive over a level crossing when the light is red. There is a serious danger to life. If you are nevertheless trapped in your car, there is only one way: accelerate and break through the barrier. The barriers are designed to break or buckle!"
