Mercedes achieved a revival of sorts in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix! George Russell secured the second pole position of his Formula 1 career on Saturday in Montreal. The Briton set exactly the same time as Red Bull star Max Verstappen, but his fastest lap came before that of the world champion, who could still face a penalty. Lando Norris in the McLaren was third. Ferrari was left behind, with both cars missing out on the hunt for pole in Q3.

Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull missed out on the second qualifying section, as in Monaco, finishing only 16th. Light rain then set in on the Île Notre-Dame after heavy rainfall the previous day. Both Ferraris, Monaco winner Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, missed out on the third and final qualifying segment. Leclerc was only eleventh immediately ahead of his team-mate.

Mercedes last far away from the podium
In the third free practice session, record-breaking champion Lewis Hamilton had already attracted attention with a best time. The Briton, who later finished seventh in qualifying, was 0.374 seconds faster than Verstappen. In the races, Hamilton and his stable rival Russell had recently been far away from the podium. Mercedes is now only in fourth place in the constructors' championship.

Verstappen goes on the hunt for his sixth win of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix. In Monaco, the Dutchman did not make it onto the podium in sixth place.

The 26-year-old leads the overall standings with 169 points ahead of Ferrari star Leclerc (138), who recently triumphed in his home race on the streets of Monte Carlo. Third is Briton Norris (113).
