Car driver seriously injured in crash with streetcar

A car driver was seriously injured in a collision with a streetcar in Vienna-Donaustadt on Tuesday. As the regional police department reported on Wednesday, the accident occurred because the driver wanted to avoid a line of vehicles in the Donaufelder Straße area. 

When he wanted to turn at the red light of a set of traffic lights, he drove over a restricted area there and overlooked the oncoming streetcar.

Driver and passenger in hospital
Despite the streetcar initiating emergency braking, a collision occurred. The driver was seriously injured, but his life was not in danger. His passenger was slightly injured. Both were given emergency medical treatment by the Vienna Emergency Medical Services and taken to hospital. No passengers in the streetcar were injured in the accident.
