Paris-Roubaix:
World champion Van der Poel makes cycling history
Road cycling world champion Mathieu van der Poel has also won the 121st Paris-Roubaix spring classic in commanding style. The Dutchman took victory after 259.7 kilometers, including 55.7 kilometers over the dreaded cobblestones, just like last year. Van der Poel had won the Tour of Flanders single-handedly just last week. This makes him the first rider since Swiss classics specialist Fabian Cancellara in 2013 to achieve this rare double.
It is the Dutchman's sixth success in one of the five cycling monuments.
Second and third place went to Van der Poel's Belgian team colleague Jasper Philipsen and the Dane Mads Pedersen. Marco Haller, the only Austrian in the field, did not finish the race.
Decision 60 kilometers before the end
The decision was made with just over 60 kilometers to go when Van der Poel attacked and the competition was no longer able to follow. Earlier, Bora rider Haller had also been in a leading group of several riders, but the Carinthian did not see the finish line in the end.
