In Pittsburgh victory
NHL: Crosby equals Gretzky’s record
With two goals and an assist, Sidney Crosby led the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-2 victory over the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League (NHL) on Monday (local time), reaching a historic milestone in the process. For the 19th time overall, the Canadian averaged at least one point per game in an NHL season. In doing so, he caught up with ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, who also achieved this feat 19 times.
"That's cool. It was obviously something I didn't want to talk about beforehand. I knew I was closer, and any time you can break into such elite circles as a player, it's special," Crosby said. The number one pick in the 2005 NHL Draft has totaled 1,584 points (587 goals, 997 assists) in 1,264 games during his 19 seasons in the league.
Meanwhile, Toronto forward Auston Matthews scored his 61st and 62nd goals of the season in the Maple Leafs' 6-4 win over the Florida Panthers. On Saturday, the 26-year-old became only the ninth NHL player to reach 60 goals for the season on at least two occasions.
