Dominic Thiem knows his opening opponent in Estoril

Dominic Thiem, who is struggling with new wrist problems, will face Maximilian Marterer at the 250 ATP tournament in Estoril. Thiem won both of his previous duels with the German in two sets in 2017 and 2019, when he was at his best.

If he also prevails against the world number 102 in Portugal, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will be waiting for him in the round of 16. The Spaniard is seeded number four and has a first-round bye.

Pain is back
Thiem had recently suffered a bitter second round defeat against Lukas Neumayer at the Challenger in Zadar. Only later did he report that the pain in his wrist, which had been damaged since 2021, had returned. Yuri Rodionov was drawn to play Chile's Cristian Garin as his opening opponent in Estoril.
