Reumannplatz with weapons ban zone on the first day
After several stabbings with injuries at Reumannplatz in Vienna-Favoriten, the weapons ban zone has now come into force.
Saturday morning. Eight o'clock. This is when Vienna's second weapons ban zone at Reumannplatz came into force. However, anyone expecting a large police presence was disappointed. Apart from a few strollers and night owls on their way home, only one police patrol strayed onto the square.
The fact that the weapons ban zone makes perfect sense was demonstrated once again on Saturday night. Around the corner from Reumannplatz, in Quellenstraße, a 29-year-old man was robbed on his way home by two unknown perpetrators. According to the police, the man was approached by the perpetrators at around 1.45 a.m. as he was about to go into his home. They asked him to open his rucksack and one of them pulled out a handgun.
High fines for possession of weapons
The incident also took place in the current prohibited zone, which not only includes Reumannplatz itself. It stretches from the main railway station via Laxenburger Straße - Schröttergasse - Bürgergasse - Reumannplatz and Herndlgasse to Gudrunstraße and from there via Sonnwendgasse back to the main railway station. Dozens of blocks of houses are affected. Around 40 signs provide information about the measures.
Ban is temporary for the time being
Those who do not comply face severe penalties. Anyone caught with a prohibited weapon must pay a fine of up to 1000 euros. For repeat offenders, the amount can rise to up to 4600 euros. For the time being, the ban is limited until June 30, 2024.
