70 million euro project
Ground-breaking ceremony for the ÖFB Campus with political celebrities
The official ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the ÖFB Campus in Vienna-Aspern was attended by illustrious political celebrities! Vice-Chancellor and Sports Minister Werner Kogler, Finance Minister Magnus Brunner and Vienna's City Councillor for Sport Peter Hacker grabbed the shovel, as did ÖFB President Klaus Mitterdorfer and women's soccer team boss Irene Fuhrmann.
Since the end of January, the excavators of the total contractor Strabag have been working on the 55,000 square meter site, with an estimated construction time of 17 months. The ÖFB's goal is for the campus to be fully operational by the start of 2026 at the latest. The project includes a small stadium with a capacity of just under 1,000 spectators, three grass pitches, an artificial pitch, changing rooms and function rooms, accommodation and modern office space for around 100 ÖFB employees.
"A historic project for the ÖFB and Austrian soccer!"
The costs of around 70 million euros are shared equally by the federal government, the City of Vienna and the ÖFB. The ÖFB is currently raising this amount from its own reserves, emphasized Mitterdorfer. The head of the association spoke of a "historic project for the ÖFB and Austrian soccer. We have managed to bring this project to fruition with our joint positive energy," said the Carinthian.
Tax money "put to good use" in this project
Kogler emphasized that the training center would "positively influence several generations of footballers. Perhaps it is the missing link for us to be regular guests not only at European Championships but also at World Cups in the future," said the sports minister, who was also pleased that ecological aspects were being taken into account in the construction project. Brunner emphasized the team spirit of all those involved in the realization of the ÖFB-Campus and affirmed that the tax money had been "put to good use" in this project.
Hacker described the training and competence center as a "well-rounded package" and pointed out that the campus could also be used by schools and clubs. However, all ÖFB national teams will mainly be seen on the training pitches, including the women's A team. Their head coach Fuhrmann was delighted. "This is a huge milestone for the future of Austrian soccer. We will find ideal conditions here to prepare for the games."
