"Respect the country"
Ronaldo remorse after scandal: “I’m not perfect either”
Following his ban for a gesture that was deemed obscene in Saudi Arabia, Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that he made a mistake. The Portuguese was banned for one match for the action.
"Sometimes passion for the game and enthusiasm leads you to make mistakes," said the 39-year-old Portugal international at a press conference. He is human and not perfect. "I haven't done anything wrong on purpose. I always respect the customs and traditions of countries."
Uproar after obscene gesture
After his team Al Nassr's 3-2 win against Al Shabab, Ronaldo recently appeared to gesticulate towards opposing fans, making hand movements in the lumbar region. He had previously briefly put his hand to his ear after shouts of "Messi" apparently came from the stands. Argentina's world champion Lionel Messi (36) is Ronaldo's long-time rival, especially when it comes to awards for individual achievements. Ronaldo was banned for one game for his actions.
"What I did and what I was punished for was a misunderstanding. I respect the country I live in. This reaction is normal in Europe, but who doesn't make mistakes in life?" added Ronaldo.
