Severe weather warning:
Snow and black ice on Austria’s roads
Heavy snowfall and black ice on the way: according to weather experts, a cold front is moving into Austria from the northwest on Friday night. It is expected to snow particularly heavily in East Tyrol, Upper Carinthia and Salzburg. The weather situation will then calm down again at the weekend.
The fresh snow will also affect main routes such as the Tauern highway and the Brenner Pass. The wintry conditions could cause problems for road traffic and rail links.
Up to one meter of fresh snow
The snow line on Friday is between around 800 and 1400 meters. Especially in the area from Upper Carinthia to East Tyrol and the southern regions from Salzburg to the main Tyrolean Alpine ridge, ten to 30 centimetres of fresh snow are expected in many valleys over the course of Friday, with a little more in some places. "In the summit regions of the Carnic Alps and the Karawanken, there will be around one meter of fresh snow," says Mansberger.
Friday will remain rainy
In Lower Carinthia and in the very low areas of Upper Carinthia, it will rain heavily at times on Friday, with a total of around 30 to 50 liters per square meter. The snow line will be between 1000 and 1400 meters. Temperatures will be between three and eight degrees.
The weather will then become friendlier again at the weekend. The sun will prevail for the most part and there will only be harmless patches of cloud across the sky. Daytime highs could be between seven and 15 degrees.
The clouds will thicken again on Monday. In the east, there will still be some sunshine, but heavy rainfall will continue until the evening. The snow line will be between 1000 and 1400 meters above sea level.
It will remain cloudy throughout Austria on Tuesday. It will continue to rain and snow, especially in the east and south. However, the wind will be light to moderate. Temperatures will climb to twelve degrees by the afternoon.
