The different situation in Austria must be taken into account with the asylum payment card, which is intended to enable migrants in Germany to buy food and clothing, among other things. Germany has fewer asylum seekers per capita than Austria. In addition, there are already more benefits in kind here than in the neighboring country. For Doskozil, the asylum payment card is therefore above all an additional bureaucratic burden.

Comparison with raging Brunner
Instead, he calls for financial support for the repatriation of asylum seekers with a negative decision. Money for services other than the necessary care should no longer be provided from this point onwards. Doskozil is convinced that 95 percent of people who apply for asylum are currently allowed to stay in Austria. Those who receive a negative decision are tolerated and can apply for a humanitarian right of residence.

"We are no longer in control of the situation." The politician compared the asylum situation to the frenzied Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP). It was like the minister going to the authorities the next day and getting his driving license right back.

"Megaphone in Hungary"
While procedures were being conducted in Austria for which other countries were responsible, migrants in Hungary would probably have to travel through the country with a megaphone (note: Hungary has few asylum applications across the EU). Doskozil repeated his well-known demand for an upper limit of 10,000 asylum applications per year - Austria had far exceeded this with around 60,000 in the previous year - and insisted on compliance with the Dublin Convention. Migrants must be deported to the European country that was entered first, he said.

Country can "only encourage"
According to Burgenland's governor, the European rules have not been updated in recent years. In principle, however, distribution within Europe is needed. Outside of the EU, the federal government is responsible for asylum and the corresponding laws; the state can only make suggestions. When asked, Doskozil also emphasized that the upper limit was only a position of Burgenland and that no agreement had been reached with the other provincial SPÖ parties.
