Storm and darkness: hikers were rescued

The mountain rescuers from Neustift (Innsbruck-Land district) were called out late on Saturday! Two hikers were caught in a storm on their descent from the Zuckerhütl and were unable to get down the mountain on their own due to the darkness.

Shortly after 9 pm on Saturday, a 59-year-old local man and a 51-year-old German woman were caught in a storm on the Stubai Glacier. The two had already been on their descent from the Zuckerhütl into the valley in the afternoon.

During the descent, the woman suffered a slight abrasion to her lower right leg from a falling rock.

A thunderstorm rolled in, causing the two mountaineers to seek shelter in a hut. "The woman suffered a slight abrasion to her lower right leg from a falling rock during the descent," the police said.

Rescued from the hut
As darkness fell and the woman was exhausted, the two decided to stay at the hut and make an emergency call. The hikers were rescued by mountain rescuers from Neustift at 10.15 pm.
