Illegal car repair shop deprives tenants of sleep

For years, the tenants of a residential building in Vienna-Floridsdorf had to put up with noise at night. Now the city council is investigating. The "Krone" knows the background to the case. 

The residents of a building in Brünner Straße in Floridsdorf have been tilting at windmills since the end of 2019. A car repair shop has been housed in the courtyard of the building for five years now, operated by changing tenants and significantly affecting the quality of life of local residents.

Initially, the noise was the main problem. "In the evening and even at night, and often at weekends, we were constantly disturbed by the noise of the loud impact wrench, the roar of the angle grinder, the roar of the engine and the hustle and bustle in the workshop courtyard. These nuisances have not only annoyed us, but have often driven us to rage," reports local resident Manfred Charvat.

He emphasizes that the constant disturbances have led to a noticeable deterioration in the quality of life and that the residents no longer wanted to put up with it.

Authority intervened as early as 2022
The residents resolutely turned to the district and demanded measures to combat the unbearable noise conditions. The authorities intervened in January 2022 and October 2023, but the hoped-for peace was short-lived. In 2024, a new tenant took over the workshop and the problems started all over again.

Former district councillor Hans Jörg Schimanek persisted and asked the municipal administration for a comprehensive investigation into the matter. The Office for Immediate Measures then visited the workshop and established the situation on site.

Proceedings are now underway, as the garage does not have a valid operating license, and the residents hope that measures will finally be taken to give them the peace and quiet they urgently need.
