The 61-year-old woman was driving her car on the main road in Lauterach towards Bregenz at around 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday. The driver fell into a microsleep and lost control of the car.
Diabetes as the cause of microsleep
The vehicle collided with four speed bumps and a traffic light, which was damaged in the crash. Fortunately, the driver was not injured, but was taken to hospital for a check-up. It cannot be ruled out that the microsleep was related to the woman's diabetes.
The 61-year-old woman was not found to be under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle, which came to a standstill as if impaled, sustained considerable material damage, particularly to the front end. A rescue vehicle, a patrol from the federal police and three vehicles with ten men from the Lauterach fire department were involved in the operation.
