Manfred Schmid: “That was a stupid red card!”

Vienna's Austria won the match for first place in the qualifying group of the Bundesliga at Wolfsberger AC on Saturday. The "Veilchen" won 1:0 (1:0) in Lavanttal and, as leaders of the table with 22 points, have a four-point lead over the Carinthians. Here are the comments on the game: 

Manfred Schmid (WAC coach): "A deserved defeat after a weak game from us. In truth, Bonmann kept us alive and also Austria partly through missed chances. Plus a stupid red card - it was a weak performance from us, I can't let that stand. We have to perform completely differently. Maybe our expectations are too high. Maybe we don't have the quality to play against every team in the lower play-offs. Maybe we need to get back to the basics - fight and passion, what the other teams are bringing at the moment."

Michael Wimmer (Austria coach): "We put in a dominant performance over 90 minutes. We were clearly the better team. What I didn't like is that we had to tremble a bit until the end because we missed one, two, three, four scoring chances where we played really well but didn't reward ourselves. Otherwise the game would have been decided earlier. Then you know how it is: It gets hectic again in the closing stages, long balls come in. But thank God we managed to see it through. We only conceded two small things at the back, it was a very good performance by the team."

Andreas Gruber (Austria goalscorer): "It can be 3-0 or 4-0 in the first half, that's how many chances we've had. That's haunting us a bit at the moment. We don't score enough goals from the chances we have. Then you have to tremble until the end. We can decide it long before that in the second half. But the win was important. Maybe it will be easier for us next week."
