Larger terrariums, countless new inhabitants: after a long period of renovation, the reptile zoo at Haus der Natur will soon be reopening - with a mission!

He can still move safely through the large terrariums. A single snake is lying on a stone - but it is made of plastic. Artist Martin Gredler can therefore paint and decorate the walls at his leisure. By June at the latest, however, live snakes and lizards will move into the large glass display cases. This is when the new reptile and amphibian zoo opens in Salzburg's Haus der Natur - just in time for the museum's 100th anniversary.

"The opening was actually planned for the end of last year. But things often turn out a little differently," laughs Director Robert Lindner. The renovation work has been underway since November 2022, leaving no stone unturned in the time-honored halls. The previous terrariums were all torn down, while countless animals were moved to replacement quarters.

Fewer terrariums, but much more space
The new enclosures for the snakes and lizards will be significantly larger and will have individual lighting, heating and ventilation. In future, different animals will live together in one terrarium. "This will definitely be a challenge for visitors. You have to take your time and see where the animals really are," says Rupert Eckkramer, head of the reptile zoo. In future, large information boards will provide background information about the animal inhabitants. "We want to take away people's fear of snakes," emphasizes Eckkramer. In addition to exotic animals - in future there will also be two stump crocodiles to admire - the museum's new showpiece also houses a separate area for native snakes. "The green mamba is already cool. But it's important to know the adder too," grins the reptile expert. After the renovation, the reptile zoo will be a good 600 square meters larger than before.

The Haus der Natur is spending almost 2.3 million euros on the renovation. It is the centerpiece of the big celebrations for the 100th anniversary. The Haus der Natur opened its doors for the first time on July 15, 1923.
