Joy in Australia
Gigantic blueberry breaks Guinness record
It weighs an impressive 20.4 grams and is almost as big as a table tennis ball: a gigantic blueberry from Australia has made it into the Guinness Book of Records - as the world's heaviest of its kind. The plump, bright blue mega-fruit was picked last November on a Costa Berries farm in Corindi in the Australian state of New South Wales, Australian media reported on Friday, citing the company.
The previous world record was 16.2 grams and was set in 2020, when an equally enormous blueberry was grown in Western Australia. By comparison, a blueberry normally only weighs between one and 3.5 grams. The new record holder was stored in an industrial freezer while Guinness World Records inspectors scrutinized the new contender. Brad Hocking from Costa Berries told Australia's ABC that his team was overjoyed that the record had now been officially confirmed after twelve weeks.
Blueberries too good for smoothies according to Costa
The blueberry is part of the new Eterna variety that the company has developed because consumers in Australia have been asking for larger berries. Meanwhile, employees are thinking about what to do with the world record-breaking berry. "We all look at them occasionally and smile," Hocking said. "A smoothie probably wouldn't be the right fate for them."
