Driving instructor spills the beans
F1 shooting star fails his driving test
After his unexpected and strong Formula 1 debut at the Saudi Arabian GP, 18-year-old Oliver Bearman is the talk of the town. However, he made a classic false start in road traffic. He failed his driving test at the first attempt.
As driving instructor David Currey revealed to the British tabloid newspaper "The Sun", Bearman needed two attempts to pass his license.
Mistake at the traffic lights
"He contacted me via Instagram because I live in his family's village. I could see from his pictures that he was already a Formula 3 driver at the time," recalled Currey: "He had previously failed his test because of a mistake at the traffic lights. I'm not sure if it was for running a yellow light. Maybe he didn't stop either."
"Down to earth"
Bearman, who finished seventh in the Ferrari last Saturday at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as Carlos Sainz's replacement (appendix operation), asked "a lot of questions" according to Currey and made a "very down-to-earth impression".
At the second attempt, with Currey as his driving instructor, he managed to get his license. The driving instructor gave his former pupil one piece of advice: "Keep it up and you'll become an absolute legend. But when I see him at home, I don't want to race with him. I don't want a burnout at a red light in the village."
Even motorsport drivers sometimes have a harder time on the road than they think ...
