28th win in a row! Al-Hilal set a world record
Saudi Arabian first division side Al-Hilal set a world record on Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Al-Ittihad in the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League.
The team led by injured top star Neymar won their 28th game in a row in all competitions, something no other team had managed before. The previous record holder was Welsh club The New Saints, who won 27 in a row in the 2016/17 season.
"Records are not as important as trophies"
Before that, the Ajax Amsterdam team led by Johan Cruyff and Austrian Heinz Schilcher held the record for 45 years with 26 wins in a row in the 1971/72 season. "Everyone here at Al-Hilal is happy to write soccer history. But records are not as important as trophies," said coach Jorge Jesus.
However, Al-Hilal can still win enough trophies. They are in the semi-finals of both the Champions League and the Saudi Arabian Cup, and with a twelve-point lead with eleven games remaining, the championship is only a formality.
