Caught in Carinthia
Hired to steal expensive rental cars!
A Ukrainian (23) and his passenger (34) were caught in a stolen car on the A2 Südautobahn - the two explained the unusual scam.
The high-priced Mercedes with French license plates attracted the attention of a Villach highway patrol on Monday afternoon. At around 4 p.m., the driver was driving towards Vienna near Federaun. "The car has been registered as stolen in France," explain the officers, which is why the vehicle was eventually stopped in Wernberg.
Mission: to take rental cars abroad
The two Ukrainians were provisionally arrested, and during their interrogation the suspects shed light on the case: The two had been hired by an organization in Lithuania to "rent high-priced vehicles at airports and subsequently take them abroad", according to a police officer.
Investigators also found evidence of two other stolen vehicles on the Ukrainian's cell phone - one reported stolen in France and one in Germany. "The driver admitted to today's crime and a trip from Frankfurt Airport." The two were taken to Klagenfurt prison.
