Red Bull Salzburg faces a truly crucial match in the Europa League. On the path to their goal of advancing to the knockout stage, they’ll likely need a decisive victory in this away match against the Slovenian champions. “A win would boost our point total, and then we’d be in a very good position. We’re determined to deliver a strong performance and take home three points,” explained coach Danny Röhl.
After two rounds of league play, Celje is still waiting for its first point. In the domestic league, the defending champion currently sits in sixth place, trailing leader Maribor by five points in the standings. In their last seven competitive matches, Celje has managed only two goals and one win—and that’s despite a coaching change in mid-September, when Zoran Zeljkovic took over from Vitor Campelos.
Even though these statistics fuel Salzburg’s optimism, Röhl didn’t want to talk about a must-win game. “It’s simply a matter of us playing good soccer, being aggressive and active, and wanting to dominate the game. If we do that, nothing stands in the way of a win, but to achieve that, we have to give it our all for 90 minutes,” Röhl emphasized.
Celje “relies on teamwork”
The club from the city of 40,000 residents is “an opponent we think we can beat,” said the coach. “But it won’t be an easy task. This is a team that thrives on teamwork, wants possession, and is well-organized when defending. They have quality and a clear game plan, even if their season hasn’t gone as they’d hoped so far.”
Salzburg, on the other hand, has little to complain about this season. In the Bundesliga, the “Bulls” are the only team still undefeated and sit in second place, three points behind Rapid. The Europa League group stage began with a valuable 1-0 away win at Levski Sofia, but last week they didn’t stand a chance in a 0-4 home loss to AC Milan. “We want to show the right response to that match,” said Röhl.
While his team’s Europa League campaign continues in two weeks with an away match at Anderlecht, Celje is set to face another Austrian club right away. The Slovenians will take on Sturm in Graz on November 5.
