Within seconds: Car on fire on the Inntal highway

Dramatic scenes unfolded on the Inntal highway (A12) in the Tyrolean lowlands on Sunday evening: a German woman's car burst into flames in a matter of moments. The driver had managed to get out of the vehicle in time. She escaped with a scare.

The German woman was driving on the Inntal freeway from Germany towards Innsbruck shortly before 7 p.m. when her car suddenly lost a lot of power at the Kirchbichl exit and finally came to a complete standstill.

She immediately got out of the car and made an emergency call. Shortly afterwards, the car was already on fire.

At the same time, the 52-year-old noticed the smell of burning and noticed the first flames in the footwell area. "She immediately got out of the car and made an emergency call. Shortly afterwards, the car was fully engulfed in flames," said the police.

A12 had to be completely closed
The vehicle fire was quickly brought under control by the alerted Kufstein fire department. The A12 had to be completely closed in the direction of Innsbruck for the duration of the extinguishing work until 19:35, after which one lane of the highway was reopened. The clearing work lasted until around 9.45 pm.

Technical defect as cause of fire
According to the police, the fire was probably caused by a technical defect in the engine compartment. The vehicle was a total loss, fortunately no one was injured.
