Special transport stops drunk driver

It was thanks to the courageous intervention of the drivers of a special transport and its escort vehicles that a serious accident did not occur on the Innkreisautobahn (Upper Austria) at around 10 p.m. on Thursday. Together they stopped a heavily intoxicated - almost two per mille - wrong-way driver.

The wrong-way driver was traveling on the Innkreisautobahn (A8) near St. Marienkirchen near Schärding in the direction of Sattledt at around 10:13 pm. A witness told the police by telephone that the driver had already been stopped by a special transporter and the escort vehicles shortly before the St. Marienkirchen near Schärding freeway service area.

1.96 per mille
When the highway police arrived, the car was in the left-hand lane, facing against the direction of travel. The driver, a 69-year-old man from Eggerding, was tested for alcohol on the spot. A breathalyzer test also gave a positive reading. The result: 1.96 per mille.

Driving license confiscated
The driver's license was therefore temporarily confiscated and the driver was prohibited from continuing to drive. Another driver was also spoken to. He stated that he was just able to avoid the wrong-way driver and thus prevent a head-on collision.
